-->If you're ready to dip your toes — or dive headfirst — into the world of Free Motion Quilting (FMQ), the Juki TL Series is a dream come true. Whether you own the TL-2010Q, TL-18QVP, TL-15, or another model in this lineup, you’ve got the perfect machine to support your quilting journey.
With powerful straight-stitch precision, a smooth motor, and intuitive controls, these machines make FMQ feel approachable, enjoyable, and yes — fun.
Whether you're a beginner or building your skills, here are some tips to help you make the most of FMQ on your TL machine.
First Things First: Set Up for Success
Before you drop those feed dogs, let’s make sure your setup is ready for free motion magic.
✅ Use the Right Foot
You’ll need a free motion quilting foot (also known as a darning or hopping foot). It allows your fabric to move freely in all directions without being restricted.
Pro tip: Most TL machines come with a basic free motion foot, but many quilters upgrade to an open toe or ruler foot for better visibility and control.
✅ Drop the Feed Dogs
All TL models include a feed dog drop lever, which you'll need to engage for free motion quilting. This lets you move the fabric freely in any direction.
✅ Set Your Stitch Length to 0
Since the feed dogs are down, you control stitch length manually with your hands. Setting the stitch length to 0 disables the internal drive from attempting to control it.
✅ Use the Right Needle
A Topstitch 90/14 needle is highly recommended. It has a larger eye for thread glide, a strong shaft for heavy layers, and sharp precision for repeated motion in multiple directions.
✅ Use a Supreme Slider (Optional, But Amazing)
A Supreme Slider or similar non-stick surface helps your quilt glide effortlessly across the machine bed—especially helpful for larger projects.
Start with Simple Motifs
Start small and build confidence. Some beginner-friendly designs to try:
- Loops & Swirls
- Meandering (aka Stippling)
- Pebbles
- Wavy Lines
Use a small quilt sandwich to practice — layer your top, batting, and backing with some scrap fabrics so you can focus on the motion without pressure.
✨ Reminder: FMQ improves with rhythm and repetition. Don’t chase perfection — just play and practice.
⚙️ Tension, Thread & Speed Tips
Tension:
- Adjust your top tension depending on thread weight and batting density. Start with a test sample.
- Look for balanced stitches: no looping on the top or bottom.
Thread:
- Use high-quality thread like Glide 40, Cairo Quilt, or PremoSoft.
- Don’t practice with dark thread. Start with light colors like white, cream, or soft pink—so you can see your stitches clearly as you learn.
⚡ Speed Control:
- All TL machines come with a speed control slider — take advantage of it!
- I recommend quilting at about 20–30% of full speed for better control.
- Press the foot pedal fully and let the speed dial control the actual pace. This gives a more consistent motor engagement, which leads to smoother stitching.
Use Your Hands Like a Hoop
Think of your hands as a quilting hoop. Using quilting gloves or silicone grip pads can really help with control and reduce drag.
Keep your hands about 4–6 inches apart, and gently guide the quilt rather than pulling it. Stay relaxed, and practice "gliding" movements.
Break your quilt into manageable areas mentally — so you stay focused and don’t get overwhelmed.
