What Size Frame Should You Choose?
Choosing the right frame size can sometimes be difficult, but here are a few important things to consider.
All of the frames require approximately 51 inches of depth for the long arm to function properly. On most long-arm frames, approximately 7 inches on each side of the frame is typically not fully quilt able due to the structure of the carriage system. Because of this, the total frame size is not the same as the actual quilting space.
For example:
A 5-foot frame (60 inches) minus about 14 inches of lost space leaves you with approximately 46 inches of usable quilting space.
You can use this same method to estimate the usable quilting area for other frame sizes.
No worries if your quilt is too big for the frame! You can quilt it in sections by quilting one area, then rolling or advancing the quilt to continue with the next section. With proper alignment, you can easily quilt a larger quilt even when it doesn’t fit on the frame all at once.
A major advantage of the Juki Miyabi
One of the big benefits of the Juki Miyabi is its machine design. Because the head above the needle is narrower and positioned at an efficient angle, you are able to maximize the full 18 inches of throat space. In real use, you only lose about 3 inches of usable space, which is significantly better than many competing machines where the loss can be much greater. This means more usable quilting area and better efficiency compared to many other long-arm models.
